Research

Neutron stars (NSs) are remnants of supernovae, first discovered as radio pulsars. These are very compact stars with radii around 10–14 km and masses 1.4–2 of that of the Sun. As NS cools down its inner part (core) forms a quantum condensate with superfluid neutrons and superconducting protons. My research group based at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom is particularly fascinated with neutron stars extreme magnetic fields reaching 1015 Gauss. We seek to answer the following fundamental questions:

  • How these enormous magnetic fields are formed?
  • Are magnetic fields anchored in the crust or core?
  • Is the NS core a superconductor?
  • How this core superconductor interacts with magnetic fields?
